The new administration building for IHK Reutlingen (The Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Reutlingen) adds a third component to the two existing buildings (‘Forum’ and ‘Haus der Wirtschaft’) on the plot in order to create a coherent urban ensemble. The urban figure of two shifted volumes reacts to its unique and specific location between the built city and the adjacent park landscape by generating a representative entrance space towards ‘Hindenburgstraße’ and a protected rear garden space that serves as an extended foyer for events with strong visual connections to the park.

The new administration building comprises 2,000 m² office area over two regular floors, the management board in the set-back upper storey and on ground floor a central foyer linking education and examination spaces, a café and the existing ‘Forum’.

The robust load bearing facade structure made from pre-cast fair faced concrete elements of different finishes gives the building its minimal and abstract language and own identity. The existing alley of trees along ‘Hindenburgstraße’ and towards the park only allows sequential views to the repetitive facade breaking down the rigour of their overall pattern.

IHK Administration Building, Reutlingen 2017-19

The new education building for ‘GARP Bildungszentrum’ - an Education Centre for metal-working professions - is embedded in a beautiful landscape setting at the periphery of Nürtingen and works as an addition to the existing school campus of the adjacent Rudolf-Steiner-Walddorfschule and the Hölderlin-Gymnasium. The project proposes a single storey solitaire that demonstrates strong connections to the surrounding landscape.

The typology of a very horizontal pavilion in combination with an inner courtyard provides a high level of spatial quality, informal communication and strong visual as well as physical connections to the open landscape. The new school building comprises a series of seminar rooms, communicative open learning areas and a metal education workshop.

Views into and through the building is a consistent architectural principle, that connects areas for theory and practice and allows inside activities to be read and projected outside the building via an ambivalent metal glass facade.

GARP Education Centre, Nürtingen 2017-19

The 'Gratianus Foundation' was founded in 2001 by Gabriele Straub and Hanns-Gerhard Rösch in Reutlingen and contains artworks from European and non-European art history spanning from the Old Stone Age to present time. The exhibition spaces are located in the renovated rooms of the 'Villa Gratianusstraße 11' from 1909. The new art depot for the 'Gratianus Foundation' generates required depot area that applies to current conservation standards.

The depot building adds to the existing ensemble of the villa, the private house and the rear garden area. A book archive at garden level and an art depot at street level are stacked vertically, only connected through an exterior landscaped ramp. The elemental, archetypal building form generates a street presence and a strong address, whereas the sloped roof form reacts to the existing roof landscape by mediating different parapet heights.

The abstract fair-faced concrete building purposely contrasts the figurative appearance of the existing villa. The abstract form is only perforated by precise, deep reveal openings serving as depot doors and a window for view to the rear garden area. The construction method allows the load-bearing facade to be poured in a single day and underlines the architectural concept with a single sculptural approach to form, material and detail.

Art Depot Gratianusstiftung, Reutlingen 2016-17

The new headquarters for AEB - a Stuttgart-based, global software enterprise - are situated on the outskirts of Stuttgart and create 400 new work places as well as a versatile offer of complementary indoor and outdoor facilities. The new AEB headquarters are conceived as a highly flexible composition of divers working environments, in which multifunctional open-spaces and cellular retreat spaces group around a carefully proportioned central hall with shared, open balconies to provide good daylight conditions on each floor.

Focusing on a single, clear volume within a highly heterogeneous urban context, the primary aim of the project was to create a solitaire building of distinct identity on the former ‘Hansa-Areal’. The new building is deliberately far recessed from the street edge to generate a representative welcoming space in front of the new headquarters. A large cantilever within the building volume marks the main entrance and provides all-weather shelter for personnel and guests.

The language of the building is derived from the company’s philosophy and ethos of openness and transparency. On the outside the universal facade is expressed as elegant, deep, stacked aluminium frames of full height glass panes. On the inside predominantly glazed, frameless partitions allow for views through the entire building and therefore visually connect open-space-areas, central atrium and outside environment.

The town of ‘Freiberg am Neckar’ is planning to re-define its school facilities and to re-order its city centre. The competition project seeks the design of a new school to be constructed immediately next to the existing school building and – following the demolition of the existing school – an overall urban concept for a re-modelled city centre. The resultant challenge of very restricted site boundaries leads to the idea of a condensed and concentric urban figure in the very south-western part of the site.

Two mirrored, L-shaped building structures generate a carefully proportioned schoolyard, protected from the adjacent motorway. By means of a covered external space at ground level, this central courtyard is visually connected with the sports fields above an underground gym to the south and thereby manifests the school as a united ensemble. A public plaza with the main entrance to the east and a green school garden with a lowered working yard to the north complete the clearly defined and programme-specific external spaces of the school. A compact school organism with clear orientation and close adjacencies is created.

After the demolition of the existing school building, the urban idea provides a well-balanced ratio of new buildings and public space, giving the new town centre of Freiberg am Neckar a contemporary look. Five public spaces with precise contours and clear definition are diagonally connected to generate an urban and spatial structure that allows for important long views, clear orientation and multiple routes through and around the new city centre. A library directly adjacent to the new school is strategically placed to link the educational and cultural buildings with the neighboring commercial area.

The project 'Campus Weststadt' near Stuttgart is proposed as a series of staggered single building blocks creating an identifiable ensemble for the new university campus by establishing close links to the existing urban grain and making references to the materials of the surrounding industrial buildings. 

The differentiated urban figure acts as a puffer between the train tracks in the South and the new created public space in the North. This campus park is developed along a new promenade reinforcing a super-ordinate route in the city and creating strong physical and visual connections from the public square and the train station in the east to the banks of a Neckar stream and the vineyards in the west. The staggered building form creates rhythm and variation along the new public university park. This movement integrates the building into its context and creates a variety of interior and exterior spaces. The public university functions such as library, assembly hall and canteen situated at ground floor level form active edges around the new university campus.

The main architectural and urban idea of a differentiated campus ensemble is also reflected in the facade language that references the industrial brick buildings in the surrounding and articulates the single university buildings as monochrome, self-similar city blocks with subtle variations in material, colour and detail.

‘The addition of a low, elongated, two-storey building - asymmetrically positioned to the main existing building and close to the edge to the fairground - is able to create a consolidated ensemble consisting of all constituent parts of the ‘Markgräfin-Wilhelmine-Gymnasium’. The physical connection to the main existing building occurs centrally in the main axis of the neo-classical building even with the level of the plinth and respects the building’s axial constitution. Therefore the project successfully offers two external spaces of very different quality and purpose between the existing school and the building extension.

The appearance of the extension building is characterised by a pleasantly reduced, stone material concept as well as a very delicate and well-detailed facade language. The proposed roof greening is appreciated both in terms of its meaning as the fifth facade and in terms of climatical benefits. Due to its compactness, its reduced and robust materiality as well as its clever topographical position, the project offers beneficial parameters that anticipate an economic viability in terms of construction, operation and maintenance. The project proposes a series of precisely situated office buildings in a divers urban context within the Stuttgart airport city. The urban idea consists of dividing the massing in two horizontal, self-similar volumes reinforcing the existing street edge but allowing views through to the adjacent fair halls and a vertical, free standing solitaire marking its important location in visual proximity to the airport and its purpose as a new foundation’s headquarters. The project’s specificities are a multi-storey car park connecting all three buildings physically and a future underground tunnel running immediately underneath the entire plot.

Due to its unique urban position the new foundation building is treated with an abstract facade language that distinguishes itself from all specific, neighbouring office buildings. A double-layered facade construction with folded, imprinted glass on the outside clads the entire building in a singular material and therefore provides its abstract expression. The footprint of the building is deliberately reduced to create a reasonably sized welcoming square in front of the new foundation building activated by temporary showrooms and flexible conference rooms.

‚Two interlocking, well-proportioned volumes allow the new administration building to generate good connections and readable references to the existing urban layout. Purposely situated in sufficient distance to the physical presence of the ‘Steingau-Bridge’, the building form creates a spatially defined entrance space and thus expresses the new address for the health insurance company. The new foyer is skilfully surrounded by the reception, the consultation rooms and the multifunctional conference room. The layout of the building allows for the desired synergies and future flexibilities. The inner organisation is self-evident and offers clear, effortless functionality.

The design understands to convince through its explicit and distinct attitude. The overall building height appears to be appropriate within the urban context and creates good urban transitions at the intersection of the building and the adjacent open spaces. The building formation doesn’t allow creating a back to the urban space.

The architectural language reflects the interior qualities and values. Few design and spatial principles define a new administrative building of positive modesty and own identity. The design for the ‘Education Campus Berresgasse’ in Vienna is proposed as a differentiated, complex learning location comprised of a singular big urban figure, yet in dialogue with the grain of the surrounding buildings. Therefore the project is expressed as a consciously positioned, identifiable urban ensemble but the scale of a very large education building is deliberately broken down into a series of interlocking volumes creating fluent connections between the public realm and the inner campus sphere.

Three self-similar, merged courtyard buildings and a triple height gym rest on a single storey, covered perimeter frame and hereby generate a series of public entrance squares, semi-public sport and event spaces and private, enclosed learning courtyards. The developed urban form is purposely aligned with the western site boundary to create a sufficient distance to the smaller private houses to the eastern edge and a generous green space in between containing all outdoor learning, sports and recreation facilities.

The big urban scale of the campus building is contrasted on the inside by a series of humanly scaled learning rooms and commonly used mixing areas with good daylight conditions and visual connections to the surrounding context or the green, private inner courtyards.

Competition Education Campus Berresgasse, Vienna 2015

The primary aim of this school project is to resolve the complex contextual and programmatic requirements within a simple figure of urban and spatial clarity. A hybrid composition of a bar building and a courtyard-building, containing the special classrooms and accordingly the individual classrooms, leads to a building form that joins the ensemble of existing and proposed buildings together to a united whole and still allows for maximal flexibility for future development on the school campus.

The formation of a low, two-storey elongated building opposite the smaller grain of the adjacent single-family houses and a three-storey courtyard-house vis-à-vis the taller grammar school generates a central schoolyard in the middle of the campus where all entrances and commonly used functions are developed from.

Inside, the new school building provides a positive sequence of light-flooded, good quality classrooms with a friendly learning atmosphere that considers the specific demands of pupils and teachers in equal measure. The individual classrooms in the upper two storeys pin-wheel around a collectively used, communicative middle that is provided good daylight conditions and visual connections to the private, inner courtyard.

The purpose of this competition was the development and the reorganisation of a fashion brand’s campus by proposing the location and the design of additional campus buildings as well as a new entrance pavilion managing arriving transport streams and offering visitors welcome and orientation around the existing campus.

The new main office building is proposed as a single precise volume and forms the representative campus opening and new arrival experience in combination with the new entrance pavilion and the existing campus buildings. The glazed, square welcome pavilion sits within a band of shared surfaces managing arriving pedestrians as well as incoming traffic and deliveries.

The massing and the position of the proposed office buildings acknowledge and reinforce the principle of open squares in front of the various office buildings creating a high sojourn quality for guests and employees. The external language of the buildings respects and enhances the transparent appearance of the existing office buildings on the campus. The reduced interior language intents to be background and canvas for the traces of the creative fashion design processes to be foregrounded.

This housing project, densifying the rear area of a deep site, comprises of three interlocking volumes on a common plinth and is developed in consequence of the heterogeneous urban context, the topographical situation and the organisational requirements of housing. Reacting to the existing urban grain and to the pattern of the conglomerated surrounding houses, the differentiated building form of shifted volumes creates a distinct but differentiated edge to the southern, adjacent public green space and articulates a clearly defined entrance space to the North with two undercuts in the building volume marking both weather-proof entrances.

Beyond the urban composition, the project is necessarily seeking to combine economic criteria with spatial quality and good design for all habitable spaces. The interlinking building blocks internally create benefits in terms of the organisation and the orientation of the housing units. Variably sized lateral flats pin-wheel around two top-lit cores in the centre of the plan. This enables all individual rooms and all bathrooms to be provided good daylight and natural ventilation. The generated building layout allows all units to have dual aspect and offers loggias as private outside spaces capturing a view towards the southern, green visual amenity.
